Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting
Minutes
September 18, 2007
Kevin Kendall called the meeting to order in his new classroom at Waddell Elementary School.
The following individuals were in attendance: Len Zentz, Ruth Candler, Beverly Kalasky, Megan Fulcher, Gretchen Sukow, Janice Leadbetter, Vicky Saunders, Kim Gregory, Rich Dowd, Chris Gavaler, and Jim Turner.
The following Agenda was discussed and officers selected.
UPCOMING TASKS:
DESTINATION IMAGINATION SUPPORT – parent volunteers needed to assist with an elementary team(s). Kim Gregory to spearhead this endeavor.
DESIGN OF NEW EVALUATION SURVEYS – Megan will bring a proposed parent survey, along with last year’s parent survey, to the next meeting.
RECRUITMENT OF GUEST SPEAKERS (Science) – speakers needed for both LDMS and Waddell Science Club and Science Enrichment. Gretchen will work on guest speaker recruitment.
RECRUITMENT OF MATH MENTORS – we need 12 math mentors. Megan will send notice out through W&L for math mentors, and will include a request for any individuals interested in assisting with Destination Imagination and in-class science helpers.
RECRUITMENT OF SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES – Rich Dowd will speak with LDMS PTA President Sherri Denson
LETTER TO SCHOOL BOARD – need committee members to prepare in early spring after receipt and analysis of parent surveys.
WEBSITE UPDATES – keep the district website up to date with what is happening with the Gifted Program. Ruth Candler will handle website updates.

PROPOSED SCIENCE CLUB SCHEDULE:
Len Zentz has agreed to be the guest speaker on the 4th Monday of each
month at LDMS and the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Waddell.
NEW BUSINESS:
NINTH GRADE HONORS CLASSES - discussion regarding elimination of Honors Classes in ninth grade at Rockbridge County High School. Due to our limited meeting times through-out the year and limited resources in supporting the district’s Gifted Program and goals, those who are interested in attending meetings regarding once again implementing the ninth grade Honors Classes, are invited to attend and voice their concerns.
QUALITY OF AP SCIENCE INSTRUCTION – this too will be discussed at meetings at the high school for those who are interested and want to attend.
